Can I customise a tour package?

Yes. Every package listed here is a starting point rather than a fixed departure, so nights, stops and hotel category are all changed to suit the people travelling. Tell us what you want different and we will rework it.

Can I combine Sikkim and Darjeeling?

Yes, and it is one of the most common requests. They sit on opposite sides of the Teesta and the road between is short. Six to eight nights is the comfortable range for both; Kalimpong in the middle turns one long transfer day into two short ones.

Can you help with hotels and homestays?

Yes. We book hotels in the towns and homestays on the ridges to the category and budget you give us. Silk Route Tours also lists homestays across Sikkim on its main website.

Can I request different travel dates?

Yes. Nothing on this page is a fixed departure, so the dates are yours to choose. Some things do depend on the calendar, such as the high North Sikkim passes and the Tiger Hill sunrise, and we will say so when they affect your plan.

Do you arrange local transportation?

Yes. Transfers from NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport and the sightseeing vehicle are part of the packages that list transfers. The vehicle runs to the itinerary on a point-to-point basis rather than staying at your disposal.

Do I need permits, and will you arrange them?

Parts of Sikkim are protected areas: North Sikkim beyond Chungthang, Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La all need permits issued against original photo ID and passport photographs, and some are open to Indian nationals only. We apply on your behalf and tell you what to carry. Darjeeling and Kalimpong need no permit.

Do you arrange family and group tours?

Yes, and group size changes the price, so it is worth telling us the real number. Some packages on the main Silk Route Tours site carry published group discounts.

What order should I do Sikkim and Darjeeling in?

Either works. Darjeeling first is slightly easier: you climb gradually from Bagdogra and are used to hill roads before the Sikkim permits and higher altitudes. We will suggest an order once we know your arrival and departure times.

Is one permit enough for the whole trip?

Darjeeling and Kalimpong need none. Entering Sikkim needs an inner-line permit for foreign nationals, and the protected areas inside Sikkim, meaning North Sikkim, Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La, need separate permits on top. We arrange all of them together.
